This novel branch represents the ongoing successful partnership between Design Collaborative and ORNL Federal Credit Union, Central East Tennessee’s largest credit union, spanning over a decade and 15 projects. Designed with a forward-thinking perspective, the Middlebrook Branch is not simply another credit union. Instead, it serves as an innovative branch for ORNL members, offering a unique, high-level service experience.

As a credit union renowned for its progressive leadership, ORNL was excited to translate this innovative approach into another physical structure.

The branch is strategically positioned at a widely frequented junction adjacent to a popular grocery store, making it highly visible to the community.Drawing inspiration from the local landscape, the design is distinguished by its color grading and graphics that resonate with the symbolic Smoky Mountains of Knoxville. Inside, the branch breaks away from traditional banking interiors, offering an open-concept layout that promotes one-on-one conversations and services. Numerous offices, a transaction counter, teller stations, and other amenities were designed with member convenience in mind.

The building stands out for its extensive use of heavy glass and maintains a light, open atmosphere.A two-story wall showcasing ORNL’s brand and local sponsorship sets the tone for the credit union’s commitment to its community.
