This transformative project breathed new life into one of the most iconic buildings on campus—preserving its historic charm while introducing bright, modern spaces.

Originally built in 1905 as the Westminster Hotel, the building has long been a cornerstone of Winona Lake’s heritage.

Its halls once echoed with gospel music and revival sermons, and its walls witnessed pivotal moments like the founding of Youth for Christ and the prayer meeting that launched Billy Graham’s first major crusade. The architectural approach honored this history by carefully preserving the structure’s original details and proportions while introducing a more open, accessible layout. The result is a building that tells its story proudly while embracing the future. Reimagining a century-old structure for contemporary use required meticulous engineering. Every system—from structural reinforcements and upgraded HVAC to lighting and life safety—was modernized to enhance comfort, functionality, and energy efficiency. Engineers worked hand-in-hand with designers and college leadership to ensure the space was not only beautiful but built to last.

Inside, the Shook Welcome Center strikes a perfect balance between warm hospitality and polished professionalism.

The renovated lobby now features the Grace Gear campus store and a lakeside rental area, providing students and visitors with both essentials and local charm. The east banquet room was transformed into a contemporary suite of admissions offices and meeting rooms, offering prospective students a welcoming and informative first step on their journey at Grace. Interior designers leaned into a palette inspired by the natural beauty of nearby Winona Lake, just blocks away. Layered textures, timeless materials, and curated displays from the Winona History Museum created an environment that feels both rooted and refined.
