As with all buildings, codes are integral to creating a well-designed space that safeguards the health, safety, and wellbeing of its occupants. With hospitals and outpatient facilities, there are even more codes that are applicable due to the delicate nature of its occupants. Any hospital that accepts Medicare and Medicaid is required to abide by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)’s regulations, which includes additional codes: 2012 NFPA 101 and 99. Most states have also adopted some version of the Facility Guidelines Institute’s (FGI) “Design and Construction of Hospitals and Outpatient Facilities”. For a full breakdown of each state’s application of the FGI Guidelines, click on the link for an interactive adoption map. https://fgiguidelines.org/guidelines/state-adoption-fgi-guidelines/ |
The purpose of the FGI guidelines is to define the necessary patient and staff support spaces, sizes, adjacencies, materials and system components to create a better standard of patient care. The guidelines are intended to be updated every four years, and the most recent version (2022) has finally been released. Each iteration of the code improves by utilizing the latest research, evidence-based design, and recommendations from experts in their fields.
