Healthcare design is unique in that the space serves both medical staff and patients. Every element is designed so that the staff is well taken care of and able to best serve their patients. Each element is also designed with the patient in mind so that they can get the care they need and feel comfortable.

One example of a design element referenced above are these pass-through nurse server cabinets. Using nurse server cabinets in inpatient designs can help with the comfort and healing of patients. These cabinets allow items that the staff needs in the patient room to be stocked and refilled without disturbing the patient. |

The cabinets can be customized many different ways depending on the needs of the hospital staff. Cabinets can have locked sections for patients’ personal medications and narcotics. Some can also have an open bottom that can store a hamper for dirty linens. This is helpful for housekeeping staff to be able to turn over rooms and pick up dirty linens without disturbing patients. Cabinets can be prefabricated or custom millwork. |

A few projects that DC used pass-through nurse server cabinets on were the Van Wert Surgery and Inpatient Expansion, and St. Rita’s E-Building. In both projects, the cabinets were installed in smoke partition walls. The purpose of a smoke partition is to enclose openings of a corridor and prevent smoke from transferring between rooms to give occupants time to exit while preventing potential smoke damage. This required custom solutions to make seals at the openings that met requirements. |
